... then there is silence...so quiet, that it is speaking

It is hard to just stay with someone in their darkness and know you can't fix it.
It will eventually get better, but they still have to go through all the hard stuff and wait for hope to show up. 

People need presence. And presence is hardest to give when the other can't respond so that you know it helps. Both must take it on faith - the hopeless - that hope will return and the helpless that being present - alone - will be a help.
